NICT hosted the 10th Forum of Japan-USA ICT R&D in Washington, DC, USA on January 24, 2014. Ten individuals from NICT headed by President Dr. Sakauchi and twenty individuals and researchers from the USA involved in government and the field of Big Data, such as Dr. George Strawn (Director, NITRD) and Dr. Charles Romine (Director, NIST-ITL), attended the forum, introduced R&D, and exchanged opinions with each other.
This forum’s main function was to survey the current R&D trends in the USA, but it also served as a great opportunity to exchange valuable insight between our countries by showing NICT the current state of active research in the USA while allowing NICT to share its R&D with leading researchers there. The field of Big Data was a major topic of conversation, and it is highly anticipated to cover a wide range of applications. On the other hand, the requirements for Big Data to be compatible with privacy protection laws were also discussed. All in all, the forum gave NICT the chance to intimately share meaningful information with the USA.
Furthermore, on the day before the forum, Jan. 23, Dr. Sakauchi was fortunate enough to visit NSF and NIST and there was a lively exchange of opinions and talks with Dr. Malet and Dr. May. Up until now, a good relationship of mutual cooperation has already been well established, but with this visit, NICT was able to further strengthen cooperation between the organizations.
