Dr. Tetsuya Kawanishi, Director of Lightwave Devices Laboratory, Photonic Network Research Institute has been named an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Elevated Fellow for his contributions to high-speed and precise light wave modulation technologies.

The IEEE, the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology, has more than 400,000 members in over 160 countries, and is a leading developer of international standards. IEEE Fellow, the highest grade of membership, is attained through nomination by peers and approval by the IEEE Board of Directors for distinction in one’s professional pursuits. Previously elevated researchers have been those who contributed to their specialized field of study for an extended period of time. It was an exceptional case for Dr. Kawanishi to be named an IEEE Fellow for his age and only six years after joining as an IEEE member.

Dr. Kawanishi researches high-speed and precise control technologies for optical frequency, phase and amplitude. In 2007, he achieved the world’s fastest optical fiber transmission in collaboration with Bell Laboratories, Inc. In 2010, the standard light source he had developed was selected as the standard signal of the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA), the largest radio telescope in the world. There is no doubt that these were the achievements the IEEE held in high regard for his elevation.

On 2004, Dr. Kawanishi presented the post-deadline paper, “High-speed optical FSK modulator for optical packet labeling” as the first author in the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference OFC/NFOEC, the largest global conference and exposition for optical communications and networking professionals. It was the first time for an NICT (CRL, the former name of NICT) researcher to be selected as a post-deadline paper’s presenter. Since then he has achieved many high-speed and precise control technologies for optical frequency, phase and amplitude.

In March 2012, Photonic Network System Laboratory and Lightwave Devices laboratory in NICT reported the post-deadline paper, “Multi-core fiber transmission system beyond 300Tera bps” at OFC/NFOEC. The multi-modulation/demodulation technologies component jointly developed by Dr. Kawanishi and a Japanese company was used in the system, which was only one of other numerous technical transfers he has achieved so far.

Dr. Kawanishi also works actively on international standards for ICT measurement technology at the International Electric Commission (IEC).

In the future, encouraged by this honor of being named an IEEE Fellow, he will step up his research based on high-speed and precise light wave modulation technologies, standardization of ICT measurement technologies and Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology that is useful for selectable optical fibers or radio communication, depending on a geographic or disaster situation.
