National Institute of Information and Communications Technology

In collaboration between NICT and the European Commission, the 4th Japan-EU Joint Call in now open in the topics of “Advanced technologies (Security/Cloud/IoT/BigData) for a hyper-connected society in the context of Smart City” and “5G and beyond”.

NICT is providing funding for two topics in collaboration with the Horizon 2020 scheme run by the European Commission. Research under these topics must be collaborations between Japanese and European institutions. NICT will provide funding for the Japanese side.

About the Japan-EU Joint Call

In the first Call, NICT collaborated with the European Commission programme FP7* and supported projects in 3 topics. The 2nd call took place in FY2014 under the European Commission’s Horizon 2020** programme, the 3rd in 2016, and this 4th Call is happening in continuation of this collaboration.

*A research funding programme run by the European Commission from 2007-2013 under the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7). The budget for FP7 is around 50 000 million euros.

**A new Research and Innovation programme started in 2014 serving as a continuation of FP7. This programme has a 7-year duration ending in 2020, and a total budget of 80 000 million euros. An overview of Horizon 2020 can be found in the website below.
